How to use the dataset search page

The dataset list lets you search and browse the published datasets and tables.

Open the dataset list

Click “Datasets” in the header (inside the menu on mobile), or open the dataset list directly. The initial view shows datasets as cards.

Search by keyword

Type a keyword (for example, “人口” for population or “郵便番号” for postal codes) into the search bar at the top of the page to narrow the results to tables whose title, description, or table name matches.

Entering a keyword automatically switches the page to table view.

Narrow down with filters

The left sidebar (on mobile, the panel opened from the filter button) offers these filters.

  • Column conditions, key columns and location data: narrow by the columns a table holds (Find tables by their columns)
  • Dataset: show only tables that belong to a specific data source
  • Tags: filter by the tags attached to the data
  • License: filter by the data’s license type

Each filter shows the number of matching tables. Combining multiple filters shows only the tables that match all conditions. The reset button clears all filters.

Switch the display unit

Under the display settings in the sidebar, you can switch what the list shows.

  • Dataset view (default): one card per data source, showing title, description, tags, and table count
  • Table view: individual tables in a list, showing table name, parent dataset, description, and tags

In table view, turning on the “show intermediate tables” switch also displays internal tables that are normally hidden.

Look inside a dataset

Datasets are organized in a database → schema → table hierarchy.

  1. In dataset view, clicking a card takes you to that database’s detail page
  2. Selecting a schema shows the list of tables it contains
  3. Selecting a table takes you to the table detail page

Clicking a table directly in table view takes you straight to its detail page.

The dataset detail page

The heading shows <handle>/<dataset name>. The star on the right lets you star the dataset.

Below the heading is a row of tabs.

Tab Contents
Tables The tables this dataset holds. Other schemas appear first, as folders
Usage guide Typical uses in recipe form (only where one is available)
Lineage A diagram of how the tables depend on each other
History Update history, with a preview of the data as of each version

“About” collects what you need in order to use the dataset.

  • Description, source site, and tags
  • License and provenance
  • Table count, object count, size, last updated, and update frequency
  • SQL name — the database name to write in your queries
  • Connection URL — what you point non-browser tools at (Connection guide)

Reading the usage guides

Some datasets show a usage guide tab on the database detail page and on table detail pages. It walks through typical uses of the dataset or table in recipe form, and you can edit and run the SQL right on the page. The same content is also collected in the cookbook.

Viewing update history

The “History” tab on the database detail page shows the dataset’s update history like a commit history. Each entry shows the update time and the tables changed at that point. Clicking a table name takes you to that table’s history tab, where you can preview the data as of that version.

Only snapshots retained in the catalog (about 7 days) are shown. See the history tab section in View table details for details.

Next steps

  • View table details: reading column info, statistics, and lineage
  • Connection guide: connect to the data you found from external tools
